How a little sharpening will greatly benefit all aspects of your life
Give me six hours to chop down a tree and I will spend the first four sharpening the axe.
We sometimes forget that we have the tools right in front of us to help us reach out potential, we just need to ‘sharpen our axe’ to get the best out of it.
Case in point; the keyboard. Every time we sit in front of our computer to send an email, watch a video or browse the web, we use the keyboard to input information. However, many of us are using it incorrectly. Either we use 2 fingers to type, have our heads hovering over the keyboard searching for the correct letters or - god forbid - do both at the same time!
Touch Typing is a skill that'll allow you to navigate around the keyboard efficiently. Using all 10 fingers, you're able to input letters into the computer without directly looking at the keyboard.
Using muscle memory and the little grooves on the keyboard, a skilled touch typist is always aware where their hands are placed.
The average speed for a person typing is roughly around 35-40 words per minute (WPM), however, mastering the touch typing skill will allow you to speed up your typing speed drastically. Back in 1946, Stella Pajunas reached an outstanding 216 WPM and her record is still yet to be broken!

Below, I outline the benefits to touch typing, hopefully, by the end of the article, you’ll be able to understand why it’s an important skill to learn.
To keep the body in good health is a duty... otherwise we shall not be able to keep our mind strong and clear.
Think about it, how often are you in front of a computer? Learning the correct positioning for typing reduces the chance of picking up a repetitive strain injury (RSI). On top of that, now that your shoulders are no longer hunched forward because you’re looking at the keyboard, you can now sit up straight and focus on the monitor, this allows you to have a healthy posture.
Make your health a priority, if you don’t have your health you have nothing at all!
Speed & Accuracy
Fast is fine, but accuracy is everything.
The ability to touch type strengthens all ten of your fingers and enables you to use the correct technique. The more you improve, the faster you’ll be able to type on the keyboard. Websites, passwords, and emails will be inputted at a faster rate and you’ll be hitting the backspace less often.
Yes, typing in passwords and websites only takes a few seconds (depending on your level of typing), but if you add up all of that time by the end of the day, you'd be surprised how much time you've spent typing on a keyboard. Reducing the total time in front of a keyboard will give you more time for other tasks to do. Which leads me to my next point.
Time is more valuable than money, because time is irreplaceable.
John C. Maxwell
Increasing your typing speed and accuracy reduces the amount of time you spend on the keyboard itself. This gives you more time to work on other projects, spend more time with friends and family or have that well-deserved break.
Do you want to be spending the majority of your time sitting in front of a keyboard trying to figure out where the letter 'P' is? (It's at top right by the way)
Focusing on the right priorities can help you do more faster.
How can you be focused on your work when you’re constantly looking down at the keyboard? With all the decisions we make throughout the day, our brains get fatigued and we lose focus. Touch typing gives us one less task to focus on and allows us to channel that energy and concentration onto more important tasks.
Being productive gives people a sense of satisfaction and fulfillment that loafing never can.
Better focus means better productivity, they go hand in hand. Being productive gives you the ability to produce and create more meaningful work, this, in turn, boosts your confidence and gives you a greater sense of accomplishment.
By concentrating on using the keyboard correctly, it can unlock and benefit other areas of your life. I should know, I too have experienced it all simply by working on my touch typing skills. From having better health to being more productive, you too can take advantage of the benefits. You just need to make sure you dedicate enough time to ‘sharpening your axe.’
It's amazing to think how a little task like typing can affect your entire day, but it's true, it does. That's why it's important to protect the little things as it'll help you with the bigger tasks down the line. If you can dedicate a little time every day on improving your typing speed, you're going to see big changes in every aspect of your life.
